Mexico’s Independence Day in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen vacation rentals -Viva Mexico!

Viva Mexico

Contrary to what you may think Independence Day in Mexico is not May 5th (Cinco de Mayo, a day that isn’t recognized here as a federal holiday and people don’t really celebrate) but September 16th. Mexico is a country so incredibly full of culture and one of the many wonderful things about living here is that I get to experience all of it first-hand.

So what happened? The condensed version (go online to read more, it’s very interesting): led by a priest, the people of Mexico, fed up with the tyranny of the Spanish crown, decided enough was enough and they were taking back their country. Yelling the words “¡Viva Mexico!” (“Live Mexico”) three times, the priest Hidalgo began the uprising. The same three words are yelled by local mayors, governors, and the President of Mexico every 15th of September, in a reenactment of the famous speech and cry for independence.

How is it celebrated now? The party starts on the 15th of September, there’s no school or work for most people on the 16th so there are fireworks, big parties at the clubs downtown PDC and get-togethers with family and friends. About a month ahead of time shops are setting up their Independence Day gear, flags, sombreros, handcrafts, etc., all in the green, white and red of the Mexican flag.

Make your way downtown PDC this September 15th to be a part of the celebration! Part of living in another country is becoming accustomed to the culture and enjoying all that Mexico has to offer. Don’t miss out and ¡¡Viva Mexico!!
